Weight gain!
We all know how these words alarm all the women out in the world. However, this is not just limited to women anymore, men are also taking all theessential measures to keep their weight in check. It is a good thing thateveryone is trying to get in shape, but if you notice, you will see the actualobsession is with the idea of getting a six-pack or an hourglass figure morethan being fit and healthy. For most of us, the concept of being healthy isachieving a particular weight goal with the help of fad diets and the so-called‘healthy’ food habits associated with the same.
Now, the issue at hand is that eating healthy and the influence offitness industry on our food intake has led to newer concerns. We believe inthe fitness industry blindly without even thinking twice. They asked us to giveup on our traditional ways of eating and switch to low fat and foreign superfoodsto maintain a ‘healthy eating’ habit. In this process, we ditched most of ourhealthy local produce and continued eating foods that are even though healthybut probably not always suitable for our body types.
Today, this is the reality everywhere. What we have failed to realize is that people from different geographical conditions have different nutritional requirements for their bodies, and following the same diet will not help everyone. It is about time we understand that our local produce and the traditional ways of eating according to one’s culture are the actual healthy eating habits than adopting a whole new lifestyle filled with imported fruits/grains/seeds.
Next time, when you go grocery shopping, try to look for ingredients that your mother/grandmother would have purchased for cooking rather than going for exotic or low-fat foods. Why? Just think for a moment, even after following all these over-hyped diets and lifestyles, how many of us did manage to stay Healthy? Mind you, I am talking about staying ‘HEALTHY AND FIT’ not SLIM. Forget being healthy, the majority have not even achieved their weight loss goals with these diets or wonder foods. The reason is, if your mind is not in terms with what you eat and do, then it is not going to show any positive results on your body too.
Everyone knows weight loss happens only if you have a balanced diet along with some physical activities. Now, again, a balanced diet is not just about protein, carbs, fat, and counting your calorie intake but is also about including foods that are wholesome, fresh, locally available, and possibly home-cooked with a content mind. Our body responds well to the kind of food that is from the same environment where we are living in and that is exactly what we should focus on, to stay fit and healthy.
In the earlier days, we hardly had any health problems such as obesity, cancer, heart diseases, or any of these modern-day diseases. When science and technology advanced, our access to everything became easier and food from around the world is not an exception in this case. When we consume imported fruits and vegetables or any food item for that matter, no one really sees or understands how it affects our health. By the time these imported foods especially the fresh fruits and vegetables reach us, they will be in their worst condition due to the process of oxidation that takes place when kept stored for days and not to mention the chemicals being used to keep them looking fresh for a longer time. After all these, it is needless to say when consumed they are toxic to your body. At the same time, if you focus on eating the local produce then you are not only helping yourselves in the best possible way but are also supporting your local farmers to help produce more goodness.
Ancient cultures preach about the importance of eating right by aligning your body and mind to the environment you live in to stay healthy. However, unfortunately, it has become a trend today mainly among the youngsters to look down on their age-old food traditions. They either think it is an old-school practice or it is too much effort to be put into for a busy lifestyle.
It is high time we understand that every traditional food culture has some science behind it to help build and maintain good health, and in fact, food was the ultimate medicine in those days. According to the Chinese food traditions, cooking is balancing the yin and the yang which is all about eating the right kind of food in the right season to help keep the equilibrium of the body. If you do it wrong, you will definitely see and feel that in your body in one way or the other.
We think and tend to believe that the grass is greener on the other side of the valley when we are enjoying a lush green forest around us. It is advised that we focus on what we have around us and look beyond only if it is needed. Again, about losing weight, accept the fact that achieving weight loss or having a six-pack is not what you should focus on, you must set your mind on having a healthy lifestyle and the rest will simply follow.
